CUA in Washington

Students are the highest priority at this small, research-oriented school located in a world capital. They participate in challenging academic programs and receive individual attention from the dedicated family that is our campus community. Extensive internship opportunities and study-abroad programs provide career preparation and round out the college experience.

Founded in 1887as a graduate institution in the European tradition, The Catholic University of America has welcomed undergraduates since 1904. More then 350 full-time faculty members teach in five schools serving 3,000 undergraduates. Distinguished as the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States, CUA is the only institution of higher education established by the U.S. Catholic bishops. The university is noted for a rich Catholic tradition that emphasizes high ideals, a balanced life and intellectual development. Students from all religious traditions are welcome.

Strategically located in the nation's capital, CUA's 142-acre campus provides an impressive combination of collegiate and city life. Student life is culturally dynamic in a city famous for museums, monuments, and landmarks such as Capitol Hill, the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, the National Zoo and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

As a history student in Washington, you'll have many opportunities to be an intern in Congress, a government or international agency or association, law firm, or museum The History Department has developed a network of contacts with a variety of such institutions, and we place our own students in a number of such positions every semester. The Library of Congress and the various research libraries and archives around the city are valuable resources, of which our history majors can and do take full advantage. The Capitol, Supreme Court, White House and other attractions are minutes away by Metrorail, a modern mass transit system that stops adjacent to campus. Also adjoining the campus is The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Catholic church in the Western hemisphere and the world's eight largest church.

The university's dedication to academic excellence is recognized internationally. The curriculum consists of an integrated series of courses firmly rooted in the liberal arts and ensures a solid education. CUA offers degrees in more than 50 major areas.

CUA students enjoy the best of both worlds -- a beautiful campus in a vibrant city.
