Latin Hagiography of the Later Middle Ages, (Hist. 679)

This "hybrid" colloquium aims to introduce participants to the genre of hagiography through medieval writings about saints and sanctity as well as the recent body of literature that employs hagiography as a source for understanding medieval society. Moving from the Bollandists and the emergence of hagiography as a "scientific" discipline, the course looks at a wide variety of methodological approaches to the study of sanctity in recent scholarship. Topics include vitae; canonization; relics; pilgrimage; miracles; gender as a category of hagiographical analysis; The Golden Legend; local religion. Most (but not all) of the readings are in translation.
