Readings on Later Medieval Italy (Hist. 692)

An introduction to the recent scholarship on later medieval Italy, focusing on the twelfth through fourteenth centuries. Through the lenses of politics, religion, society, law, and economy, along with a variety of approaches, we will examine both Italy’s distinctiveness and continuity in relation to Northern European institutions. Topics can include communal politics, civic religion, women and family, the commercial revolution, violence and vendetta, literacy and patronage.
