M.A. Degree

Thesis vs. Non-Thesis Options

The M.A. thesis is optional. Students who wish to write one should consult pertinent faculty early in their graduate career; approval to pursue the thesis option will depend upon the student’s ability to identify a feasible project and the availability of faculty to supervise it. Students who receive approval should register for M.A. thesis direction in two consecutive semesters (for a total of 6 credit hours), and the thesis must be completed within that period. With the approval of the adviser and the director of graduate studies, the thesis may take the place of the two research seminars required for the M.A. degree.
